Gosforth Summer Relays & Junior Races 2026 – Event Report

Great Park once again hosted the UK Athletics‑licensed Gosforth Summer Relays & Junior Races on Sunday 2nd August 2026. Under bright sunshine and perfect racing conditions, the venue looked fantastic and provided an excellent backdrop for a full morning of competitive running.

The event was organised by Gosforth Harriers & Athletics Club, who will proudly celebrate their Centenary in 2027. The club continues to thrive, with members ranging from 8 to 84 years old and competing both locally and nationally. We are grateful to Great Park Community Centre for serving as our event HQ again this year.

This year’s Senior Relay attracted a record 84 teams from across the North East, including:

• Ashington Hirst Running Club
• Claremont Road Runners
• Elswick Harriers
• Heaton Harriers
• Jesmond Joggers
• Low Fell Running Club
• Newcastle Frontrunners
• North Shields Poly
• Ponteland Runners
• Prudhoe Plodders
• South Shields Harriers
• Sunderland Harriers & A.C.
• Sunderland Strollers
• Tyne Bridge Harriers

and of course, Gosforth Harriers. Each runner completed a fast 2‑mile leg around our aptly named “Great Park Guitar” route.

The Junior Races also saw exceptional participation, with 75 young athletes from local clubs and the Great Park community taking part over distances of 1 to 1.25 miles on a safe, well‑marshalled out‑and‑back course.

Feedback from runners, officials, parents, and spectators has been overwhelmingly positive. Marshals were well positioned, signage was clear, and the lead bike and tail runners ensured a smooth and safe event throughout.

Away from the racing, the Cake Stall proved as popular as ever, joined this year by the new “I Love Coffee” cart. Local business Whale Company also supported the event with promotional offers, and the ice cream van was a welcome addition in the warm conditions.

Gosforth Harriers delivered outstanding performances across the board:

• Juniors: 3 × 1st places, 2 × 2nd places, 5 × 3rd places
• Ladies: 2 × 3rd places
• Men: Winners of the overall Veteran Trophy
• Fastest individual V50 male and female athletes

A fantastic set of results that made both Gosforth Harriers and Great Park proud.
