On Monday evening, the Gosforth Harriers took to the streets of Great Park in a show of solidarity and support for women’s safety. The club proudly joined the national campaign “This Girl Can Run”, promoted by England Athletics, which aims to raise awareness about the challenges women face when exercising after dark.
Let’s Lift the Curfew: A Movement for Change
The initiative, titled “Let’s Lift The Curfew”, highlights a reality many women know all too well—the need to alter routes, plans, or even avoid running altogether due to safety concerns. These fears are especially heightened during the darker months, when daylight hours are limited and visibility is low.
Recognising the importance of this issue, Gosforth Harriers organised a special night-time event to stand together and amplify the message. Runners of all ages—seniors and juniors alike—gathered for a mass warm-up at Great Park Town Centre before jogging through the estate and assembling on Brunton Lane bridge over the A1 for a celebratory photo.
A Club That Cares
Leonie, one of our dedicated coaches and committee members, shared a powerful message:
“In the darker months, women have to consider that they may need to change their plans due to their fear of predatory men. We want to promote safety and help to create a deeper understanding of this in both our male and female members at senior and junior level.”
Her words reflect the club’s commitment not only to running, but to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all members.
Looking Ahead
With our centenary year on the horizon and a new home in Great Park, Gosforth Harriers is growing stronger than ever. Events like this not only raise awareness but also help us connect with the wider community and show what we stand for.
We’re proud to be part of a movement that empowers women and encourages open conversations about safety. Together, we can help lift the curfew—and make running safer for everyone.
In the News
We’re thrilled that our efforts were recognised by Chronicle Live, who featured our event and helped spread the message even further. It’s a proud moment for the club and a testament to the impact we can make when we come together.
