Let’s Lift the Curfew: Runners Unite to Light Up Great Park

On Monday evening, Gosforth Harriers was proud to join forces with These Girls Can Run to host a very special community event as part of the Let’s Lift the Curfew movement.

What followed was a truly inspiring evening that brought together runners and walkers from across Newcastle and beyond. As the sun set over Great Park, the streets filled with participants wearing club colours, high-vis clothing and plenty of smiles, creating a powerful visual statement of solidarity, support and community.

The event welcomed not only Gosforth Harriers members, but also runners from fellow local clubs including Elswick Harriers, Ponteland Runners, Jesmond Joggers, Heaton Harriers and Tyne Bridge Harriers. We were equally delighted to see so many non-club runners from the local community coming along to lend their support and be part of something bigger than a training run.

While there were plenty of miles covered throughout the evening, this event was never about pace, distances or personal bests. Instead, it was about visibility, inclusion and standing together. It was an opportunity for people to come together and show their support for creating safer environments where everyone feels confident, welcome and able to enjoy being active without fear or restriction.

One of the most striking moments of the evening was seeing such a large and diverse group moving through Great Park together. The sight of so many runners and walkers lighting up the area served as a powerful reminder of the strength that exists within our running community and the positive impact that can be achieved when clubs, organisations and individuals come together behind a shared cause.

Events like these demonstrate that running clubs are about far more than training sessions and races. They are about friendship, support, belonging and making meaningful connections within our communities. Monday evening perfectly captured those values and showcased the very best of what our sport can offer.

Gosforth Harriers would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who attended, whether you came as part of a club, with friends, or on your own. Your presence helped create an atmosphere that was welcoming, uplifting and genuinely inspiring.

We would also like to thank These Girls Can Run for partnering with us to deliver such a fantastic event, and to all the volunteers who helped make the evening run so smoothly.

Finally, a special thank you goes to Del Stevyn Photography for capturing the evening through his excellent photography and drone footage. His images perfectly reflect the energy, togetherness and spirit of the event, and we’re delighted to be able to share them with our community.

Monday evening showed what is possible when people come together with a shared purpose. We left Great Park feeling proud of our community, inspired by those around us and hopeful that together we can continue to make a difference.

Together, we’re stronger. Together, we’re louder. Together, we can help lift the curfew. 💜💚🤍
