Training Sessions

At Gosforth Harriers, every member has the opportunity to take part in structured, progressive training sessions designed to bring out the best in runners of all abilities. Our programmes are carefully planned and delivered under the guidance of fully qualified coaches, ensuring that each session is safe, supportive, and geared towards helping you achieve your goals.

From time to time, our training schedules may change. Whenever this happens, all members will be notified promptly through our WhatsApp channels, and updates will also be published here on the website.

If you’re joining us for the first time, we recommend getting in touch beforehand to confirm the meeting location and to ensure that a coach or run leader is available to welcome you.

Monday

On Mondays, our beginners, juniors, and seniors all come together for training sessions based at the Great Park. We gather at 18:20 for an 18:30 start, with sessions wrapping up around 19:30. Meeting points for the junior and senior groups are listed below.

  • Beginners (ages 8-11) take park in fun, structured running drills and exercises designed to build skills and confidence.
  • Juniors cover around 4 miles at a steady pace. We require our juniors to be able to complete 2K (such as Junior Park Run) in 9 minutes or less. This is to ensure that they are able to keep pace with the rest of the group.
  • Seniors enjoy a club run of 5-6 miles, also at a steady pace. For seniors, the minimum pace is 10 minutes per mile.

These sessions are a great way to train alongside fellow Harriers, improve fitness, and enjoy the camaraderie of the club.

Sunday

Every week at 8:30, our members gather for our Sunday Long Run — a relaxed, social outing that brings the club together. It’s not just about covering miles; it’s about sharing the journey, enjoying the company, and building strength for the weeks ahead.

Whether you’re training for a race or simply want to enjoy a sociable start to your Sunday, the long run is a cornerstone of every runner’s week. Come along, share the miles, and discover how far you can go together.

Why the Long Run Matters

  • Endurance boost: Longer distances train your body to sustain effort, improving stamina for races and everyday running.
  • Efficiency gains: Running steady for an extended time helps your body adapt to using energy more effectively.
  • Mental resilience: Spending time on your feet builds confidence and focus, preparing you for tougher challenges.
  • Recovery & rhythm: A steady long run balances harder sessions, helping you recover while still progressing.
