Let’s Lift the Curfew: Join Gosforth Harriers for a Community Evening of Walking, Jogging and Running

Let’s Lift the Curfew: Join Gosforth Harriers for a Community Evening of Walking, Jogging and Running

As the clocks go back and the evenings become darker, many people adjust their outdoor routines. For women in particular, concerns around personal safety often mean changing when, where, or even whether they exercise outdoors at all.

This year, Gosforth Harriers & Athletics Club in association with These Girls Can Run is proud to support the Let’s Lift the Curfew movement by hosting a free community event on Monday 26 October 2026, bringing people together to stand in solidarity and help create a visible, welcoming and supportive presence in our local outdoor spaces after dark.

Why “Let’s Lift the Curfew”?

Research shows that 72% of women in the UK change their outdoor activity habits during the winter months because of safety concerns. Many avoid running, walking, cycling or exercising alone after dark, altering routes, changing times, or staying indoors altogether.

The Let’s Lift the Curfew campaign challenges the idea that anyone should feel restricted in how they enjoy public spaces due to fear for their personal safety. By encouraging communities to come together, the movement aims to highlight the importance of creating environments where everyone feels safe, confident and able to be active outdoors whenever they choose.

At Gosforth Harriers, we believe running and walking should be accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone. Supporting this initiative is a natural extension of our commitment to encouraging participation in sport and physical activity throughout our community.

Lighting Up the Evening Together

As part of the event, we encourage participants to wear bright or reflective clothing and bring a head torch if they have one. Together, we’ll create a powerful visual statement as we light up the evening and demonstrate the strength that comes from communities coming together.

More importantly, we’ll be sending a clear message that everyone deserves to feel safe while enjoying our streets, paths, parks and shared public spaces.

More Than a Run

This isn’t about speed, distance or personal bests.

It’s about visibility, support and community.

By coming together for one evening, we can help raise awareness of the challenges many people face when exercising outdoors after dark and show our collective commitment to making outdoor activity feel safer and more accessible for everyone.

Every person who attends contributes to that message.
